It is no surprise that homeschooling a room full of brothers can be extremely hard on me.
Boys are not created equal when it comes to learning.
I am no expert by any means, but here are some things I like to do to keep their interest.
Try to do your lessons first thing in the morning.
We definitely do not set our alarms.
But I have found that by causally doing lessons at our breakfast island before the craziness of the day starts has helped us stay on track tremendously.
Sonlight Curriculum does a great job at keeping the lessons engaging yet also not too difficult to teach. One of our favorite things is their Literature selections. They combine all of the classic books of my childhood for me, I don’t have to sit and compile lists or Amazon carts. It is all there and sent to my door ( SUCH A HELP FOR THIS MAMA OF FOUR )
Another thing we like to do is take the lessons outside weather permitting of course. There is nothing like learning about nature when you are actually outside. Or Math that is hands on counting sticks and pebbles. Some of our best days are when we do all lessons on our back patio.
Don’t be afraid to switch it up. School DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE CONVENTIONAL SCHOOL. What I mean by that is, don’t be afraid if its less sitting more moving. Yes my middle son Marco likes to do his handwriting while standing, thats perfectly okay with me and one of the beauties of homeschool. No such thing as having to ” stay in your seat”. If the boys are getting rowdy sometimes I send them outside for some laps around the cul de sac, that counts as Physical Education no ? 🙂
Another vital tool is using my Essential Oils… yep I said it.
Power of the plant magic I suppose.
Some of our favorites to diffuse during lessons are
Peppermint oil is so refreshing and helps us all stay on task.
We also really love to rub GeneYus oil on the boys necks before we start.
GeneYus™ is an excellent blend to diffuse for young minds that are focusing and concentrating on projects.
Really what I am finding now with different age and learning skills within our home is to take many breaks and to start off with small goals and ROUTINES ! I am also not afraid to double up on lessons if the day is going well. It just takes the pressure off of me later in the week and gives us more flexibility and freedom.
There is no one way to take on this task. I am constantly changing it up to meet my families needs best, thats the beauty of it. Homeschool is NEVER one size fits all. Focusing on God’s sweet grace daily and trusting that he will always direct me in this journey.
Hope you are having a great week. Please email or message me on Instagram if you have any questions !1
